Hiking Trip: Tian Shan in Every Step

Tour Route: Bishkek –– “Fairy Tale” Canyon – Karakol – Jeti-Oguz – Ala-Kul – Altyn-Arashan – Karakol – Bishkek

This route traverses picturesque mountain valleys, alpine meadows, a glacial lake, and passes of the Tian Shan. It is designed for travelers with good physical fitness as it involves long treks and significant elevation changes.
At the mountain passes, endless horizons of mountain ridges open up, and the voices of turbulent rivers echo through the canyons. Here, nature thrives in its pristine beauty, filling the heart with a sense of freedom and eternity.

Day 1
Bishkek – “Fairy Tale” Canyon – Karakol
Distance: 400 km
Elevation Gain: 1000 m
Descent: 0 m

Arrival in Bishkek.
Meeting with the driver at the airport.
Breakfast.
Drive through the Boom Gorge, located in the foothills of the Tian Shan, which serves as a gateway for travelers, offering them passage into a world of incredible mountain landscapes.
Lunch.
Swimming at the wild beach on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul.
Arrival in the city of Karakol, known for its unique architecture, blending the historical and cultural traditions of various peoples. Karakol is famous for its wooden churches, ancient buildings, and picturesque natural scenery.
Accommodation at a guesthouse.
Dinner at “Altyn-Kumara” café.

Day 2
Karakol – Jeti-Oguz
Distance: 35 km
Elevation Gain: 600 m
Descent: 0 m

Breakfast.
Journey to the “Jeti-Oguz” Gorge.
We begin the trek from the “Jeti-Oguz” resort. On this day, we will walk 8 km. The trail starts at the base of the majestic Tian Shan mountains, where the air is strikingly clean.
Lunch.
Among dense spruce forests, a rushing river flows, its silver waters shining in the sun, roaring and crashing against dark rocks.
Dinner.
Overnight in tents.

Day 3
Western Teleti – Teleti Pass
Distance: 12 km
Elevation Gain: 500 m
Descent: 0 m

Breakfast.
The trail winds through a narrow gorge, where sheer cliffs rise like giants above the travelers. Their peaks seem unattainable.
Lunch.
In the sunlight, the cliffs take on various hues, and in the evening, when the sun sets below the horizon, the gorge is enveloped in a mystical twilight.
Dinner.
Overnight.

Day 4
Teleti Pass – Karakol Gorge
Distance: 14 km
Elevation Gain: 600 m
Descent: 1300 m

Breakfast.
The trail winds between giant boulders, disappearing into dense juniper bushes. At times, mountain goats can be seen gracefully leaping from one rock to another. The higher the trail climbs, the wider the views open up – behind the gorge lies a valley blanketed with alpine meadows, and in the distance, snow-covered peaks are visible on the horizon.
We will cross over to Eastern Teleti via the pass (3800 m above sea level).
Lunch.
Descent into Karakol Gorge.
Dinner.
Overnight.

Day 5
Karakol Gorge – Ala-Kul Lake
Distance: 12 km
Elevation Gain: 1000 m

Breakfast.
A pleasant breakfast in nature, with the scent of meadow herbs and the delicate sounds of nature – the murmur of streams, the chirping of birds, and the distant echo of falling rocks.
Ascend to Ala-Kul Lake (3532 m above sea level).
Lunch at the “Orphan” shelter.
Ala-Kul is a high-altitude lake, named for its stunning water color (in Kyrgyz, “ala” means “multicolored” and “kul” means “lake”). The water in the lake has an incredible turquoise hue, creating a mesmerizing landscape, especially against the backdrop of the snowy peaks.
Dinner, overnight in tents by the lake.

Day 6
Ala-Kul Lake – Altyn-Arashan Gorge
Distance: 14 km
Elevation Gain: 360 m
Descent: 1360 m

Breakfast.
A breathtaking sunrise over the lake – a truly magical sight: the night fades into the pre-dawn mist, and the sun slowly rises, illuminating nearby mountain peaks. An unforgettable scene – the snow-covered summits of harsh glaciers bathed in the first rays of the sun.
Climb to Ala-Kul Pass (3860 m above sea level), where the views of the Kungey-Alatoo ridge unfold.
Lunch.
Descent through the colorful Keldike Gorge into the “Altyn-Arashan” valley with alpine meadows. After the challenging trek, you can take a dip and relax your muscles in the hot springs.
Dinner.
Overnight.

Day 7
Altyn-Arashan – Karakol – Bishkek (420 km)
Distance: 430 km
Descent: 1500 m

Breakfast.
Transfer to Karakol by off-road vehicle.
The beautiful nature and the winding road will captivate any nature lover!
Lunch at “Saymaluu” café.
Transfer to Bishkek.
Departure to the airport.

Important to Know!
90% of Kyrgyzstan’s territory consists of mountains, half of which are high-altitude regions above 3000 meters. Therefore, during the trip, be prepared for altitude changes ranging from 300 to 1000 meters above sea level. The air temperature can vary from +38°C to +5°C.
